Gravitrams and Rolling Ball Machines are kinetic art that provide a fascination for people of all ages. The inherent gracefulness of a sphere as it falls through space, guided by gravity and objects it intersects, has captured our attention for millenia in sports, in play and now in art.

The dual simplicity and complexity of these sculptures has spectators enthralled and captivated by even the most straightforward of apparatus. As it falls through the mechanism the sphere describes a pre-determined path, often triggering other motions as it passes by gates, switches and gadgets. But these machines are rarely mudane and predictable - paths change, musical tones ensue and many sculptures consume an hour or more of observation in order to fully appreciate every nuance the artist has built into it.

The following is a very limited sampling of rolling ball sculpture.
